The Abyss Lord was one of my top choices for lane clear/control, but he’s got some other utility as well.

 

= General Features =

  • highly advantageous against large groups of enemies due to spammable AoE burst with stun (really good against Controlled Burn mutator)
  • recovers mana very quickly against large groups of enemies
  • can easily remove latched assassins with a timed Knight of the Abyss
  • has some self-sustain, gets a movement speed buff, and can reduce enemy damage with Abyss Fountain
  • can kill Siege Rollers with ease if resources are properly managed

 

= Equipment =

  • you can use any of the wayfarer weapons for some flavor, since most shards don’t work well on the Abyss Lord’s weapon

 

= Ascension Priority Suggestions =

(COMBAT HERO ONLY)

Switch the order around as necessary.  If you plan to hybrid your Abyss Lord, see the builder ascension section below.

  • Offense: Knight of the Abyss Damage, Hero Health, Abyss Knight Radius, Fountain Heal

  • Utility: Hero Crit Chance, Movement Speed, Ability Mana, Abyss Fountain Range, Hero Crit Damage

 

= Usage/Tips =

  • to stun an incoming assassin off of you, wait at least 1 second after the telegraph and use Knight of the Abyss (ideal if closer to defenses that can kill it)
  • use Abyss Fountain often to reduce enemy damage, heal, and move around
  • make it a habit to siphon mana in between Knight casts (don’t want to waste time recovering when you need to use your abilities immediately)
  • your primary attack siphons mana faster with large groups
  • spamming your Knights on a single boss is very mana intensive, so either switch to a more efficient boss-killing hero or try to kill the boss with nearby minions so you can siphon mana quickly

< Builder Hero Overview: Ramster/Orc Blockade Builder >

The Ramster is one of the most versatile defenses in the game, especially since Kobolts have been moved to flyer lanes, so I tend to use them against the most difficult lanes.  I use the Orc Blockade as a way to reinforce my physical damage when there is a Spellbreaker mutator active.

 

= General Features =

  • the Ramster is a great answer to some of the tougher lane types (e.g. Cyborks/Frosties), since it has long range and can AoE in a cone
  • the Skeletal Orc blockade is one of the few blockades with a strong attack, and it’s even physical to help with the Spellbreaker mutator

= Ascension Priority Suggestions =

 

(BUILDER HERO ONLY)

Unless you have more than 210 Ascension, you’ll likely only have enough points to dedicate to one defense’s damage and range talents.  If necessary, create multiple Abyss Lords to optimize for each defense type.

Change the ordering if you prefer to focus on a combat hero first.  This is only possible if you have a really high ascension, so consider using multiple Abyss Lords if you wish to optimize your points for each role.

  • Offense: Hero Damage, Hero Health, Heroic Boost Damage
  • Defense: Defense Speed, Ramster Damage, Skeletal Orc Health
  • Utility: Defense Crit Chance, Ramster Range Gambit, Hero Crit Chance, Movement Speed, Ability Mana, Abyss Fountain Range, Defense Crit Damage, Hero Crit Damage

 

= Usage/Tips =

  • Ramsters work best on lanes that are flat and straight, so try to build around those areas
  • if you’re not expecting the lane to have kobolds or enemies with a wide cleave, build Ramsters closer to Power Pylon blockades for a buff
  • Spellbreaker with Cyborks and Frosties is one of the toughest mutator/mob combinations to deal with, and brute forcing with Ramsters is usually still the most convenient defense option (add more Ramsters or upgrade as necessary to overcome the resistance)
  • 2-3 Ramsters are often sufficient enough to clear groups of melee and mid-range enemies
  • consider having some CC effects in front of Orc Blockades to get some free attacks in

 

= Shard Variants/Notes =

  • for the final shard slot of the Orc Blockade, use Power Transfer if you prefer a more aggressive blockade
  • Shielding GuardSharpened SpikesExplosive GuardExplosive Shielding Guard, and Power Pylon are some other potential options for the Orc Blockade
  • if you have a high speed substat on your Ramster’s relic, Defense Rate can be switched to Defensive Critical Damage
  • if available and desired, use Vicious Strikes instead of Defense Rate on Ramsters to extend its range further (can probably reach distant Hex Throwers)
  • (OPTIONAL) if you’re not using the Abyss Lord as a combat hero, you can equip Speed Boost on any pair of boots for faster movement when building

 

= Pets =

  • if you’re going as a combat/builder hybrid, use the pet in the combat hero section above
  • (OPTIONAL) a pet with Sandstorm can help you move around the map faster
